Archduke John of Austria, a member of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, was an Austrian field marshal and imperial regent (Reichsverweser) of the short-lived German Empire during the Revolutions of 1848.
JOHN, ARCHDUKE OF AUSTRIA (1782–1859), and imperial regent of Germany. John was born 20 January 1782 in Florence and died 10 May 1859 in Graz. An enthusiastic supporter of Enlightenment, progress, civil society, and national self-determination, John has the reputation of being the "liberal Habsburg."
Born in Florence on 20 January 1782, Archduke Johann was the son of Peter Leopold, grand duke of Tuscany (later, as Leopold II, Emperor of Austria from 1790–1792) and Maria Ludovica of Spain from the House of Bourbon.
