Don John of Austria ( Spanish: Juan de Austria, German: Johann von Österreich; 24 February 1547 – 1 October 1578) was the illegitimate son of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. Charles V met his son only once, recognizing him in a codicil to his will.
The Archduchy of Austria (Latin: Archiducatus Austriae; German: Erzherzogtum Österreich) was a major principality of the Holy Roman Empire and the nucleus of the Habsburg monarchy. With its capital at Vienna, the archduchy was centered at the Empire's southeastern periphery.
Born in Florence on 20 January 1782, Archduke Johann was the son of Peter Leopold, grand duke of Tuscany (later, as Leopold II, Emperor of Austria from 1790–1792) and Maria Ludovica of Spain from the House of Bourbon.
