The Rt Revd Dr Alan Gregory Clayton Smith is the tenth Bishop of St Albans, and his ministry in the diocese began on 19th September 2009 with a Service of Welcome and Inauguration in St Albans Cathedral.
The Bishop of St Albans, Bishop Alan, is the diocesan or most senior bishop, responsible for oversight of the whole diocese. He is supported by the Bishop of Bedford, Bishop Richard and the Bishop of Hertford, Bishop Jane.
The first Bishop of St Albans was Thomas Legh Claughton, who served from 1877 to 1890. The see is in the City of St Albans, where the cathedra (bishop’s seat) is located in St Albans Cathedral. The cathedral building itself dates from 1077.
