El imperio bizantino fue conocido por los turcos como روم (Rûm, 'tierra de los Romanos') y sus habitantes como rumis, calificativo que por extensión acabó aplicándose a los cristianos en general, y en especial a aquellos que se mantuvieron fieles a su fe en los territorios conquistados por el islam.
"Bizancio" es el nombre con el que se le conoce la mitad oriental y griega del Imperio romano que sobrevivió hasta 1453 (denominado « bizantino » por el historiador alemán Hieronymus Wolf en 1557), por lo que tiene sus orígenes en la misma fundación de Roma.
