Queen Claude of France, reigned as duchess of Brittany from 1514, but under her husband king Francis was not able to maintain an independent government in the Duchy of Brittany. Claude's son Francis I was invested as duke of Brittany. But this act meant next to nothing to advance Breton independence.

Born on 19 August 1515, Louise of France was the first child born to the newly-ascended King of France, Francis I, and his first wife, Claude, Duchess of Brittany. Claude was the eldest child of Louis XII of France, whom Francis succeeded.
Claude was recognised as Duchess of Brittany on 9 th January 1514 and married to Francois on 18 th May 1514. Francis and Claude were crowned as King and Queen of France on 25 th January 1515 at Rheims Cathedral. Henri II of France, Queen Claude's son.
