Dundonald Castle is situated on a hill overlooking the village of Dundonald, between Kilmarnock and Troon in South Ayrshire, Scotland. Dundonald Castle is a fortified tower house built for Robert II on his accession to the throne of Scotland in 1371 and it was used as a royal residence by Robert II and his son Robert III .

Dundonald Castle was a large tower-keep and associated courtyard built upon the remains of a 13th century towered courtyard castle, itself used as a fortified residence or settlement in earlier centuries. The ruins are managed by the Friends of Dundonald Castle, a charity, and is open to the public for a fee.
Scotland, Europe. Southern Scotland. Dundonald Castle commands impressive views and, in its main hall, has one of the finest barrel-vaulted ceilings preserved in Scotland. It was the first home of the Stuart kings, built by Robert II in 1371, and reckoned to be the third most important castle in Scotland in its time, after Edinburgh and Stirling.
