The kingdom was governed as a regency until Gustav IV Adolf was able to assume power himself in 1796. During his reign, his foreign policies were reckless and he took a position against Napoleon.

  6. The immediate consequence of the Russian invasion was the deposition of Gustav IV Adolf by the Coup of 1809 on 13 March 1809, and the exclusion of his whole family from the succession.
