Members of this phylum are characterized by the presence of a helix or a double heli.
The phylum to which ochrophytes belong in his classification system is Gyrista, a clade that also contains some heterotrophic heterokonts, namely the Pseudofungi and the Bigyromonada. Gyrista and Bigyra compose the two main branches of stramenopiles, which are regarded as the superphylum Heterokonta within the kingdom Chromista .
Gyrista. The Gyrista lineage encompasses the vast majority of Stramenopila species . The earliest diverging group of the lineage consists of free phagotrophs possessing the two flagella typical of Stramenopila.
