James fitz Maurice FitzGerald, called Court Page, was earl de jure, but stayed, at least for the moment, away in London. The lands were disputed by James Butler, 9th Earl of Ormond (c. 1496 – 1546), who had married the only daughter of the James FitzGerald, 10th Earl of Desmond .
The English government imprisoned James FitzGerald, the eldest son of the last earl, in the Tower of London for decades. However, in 1600, during the Nine Years War, in an attempt to pacify the people of Munster, James was freed and title recreated for him though without right of inheritance.

Biography. James FitzMaurice FizGerald, 10th Earl of Desmond, was famous for strategising with 2 European monarchs against England and for arranging the Treaty of Dingle (April 1529) between Ireland and Spain. He married Amy O'Brien, daughter of Turlogh Mac-i-Brien-Ara, Bishop of Killaloe, and became 10th Earl upon the death of his father in 1520.
