Nació en el castillo de Moritzburg en Zeitz, fue el hijo mayor de Mauricio, duque de Sajonia-Zeitz, y su segunda esposa, Dorotea María, una hija de Guillermo, duque de Sajonia-Weimar. Su padre tuvo dos hijos de su primer matrimonio, pero los dos murieron en la infancia antes de su nacimiento.
Sucedió como duque de Sajonia-Zeitz a su padre cuando murió el 4 de diciembre de 1681. Born in Weimar, Dorothea Maria was the youngest daughter of Duke William IV of Saxe-Weimar from his marriage to Eleonore Dorothea of Anhalt-Dessau, the daughter of Prince John George I of Anhalt-Dessau. She was named after her maternal grandmother Dorothea Maria of Anhalt, who had already died at that point in time.
The only rulers were Duke Maurice of Saxe-Zeitz and his son Duke Moritz Wilhelm of Saxe-Zeitz. This line was the first of the three Saxon secundogenitures to die out in 1718, when the only male heir, Prince Christian August , joined the clergy. [1]
