About Us. Nevada is located in the Southwest portion of the State of Missouri. Originally called Nevada City, the community grew out of the municipal organization of Vernon County and was chosen as the county seat in 1855.
Cottey College is a private women's college in Nevada, Missouri. It was founded by Virginia Alice (Cottey) Stockard in 1884. Since 1927 it has been owned and supported by the P.E.O. Sisterhood, a philanthropic women's organization based in Des Moines, Iowa.
Nevada City was incorporated in 1869, at which time it dropped the word City from its name. The city's first sidewalks were made of wooded planks. Nevada has its first police and about 300 persons were living in Nevada.
Nevada is one of only two states to significantly expand its borders after admission to the Union, with the other being Missouri, which acquired additional territory in 1837 due to the Platte Purchase.
