Imperial Moscow University was one of the oldest universities of the Russian Empire, established in 1755. It was the first of the twelve imperial universities of the Russian Empire. Its legacy is continued as Lomonosov Moscow State University, which occupies some of its original buildings.
In 1821, the university was renamed Saint Petersburg Imperial University. In 1823, most of the university moved from the Twelve Collegia to the southern part of the city. In 1824, a modified version of the charter of Moscow University was adopted as the first charter of the Saint Petersburg Imperial University.
Potemkin was born into a family of doctors. In 1893, he graduated from the Tver gymnasium in 1893 and entered the History and Philology faculty of Imperial Moscow University. While studying in the university he was active in the student movement and distributed illegal literature among other students.
