Okayama city, the prefectural capital, lies in the central Okayama plain, astride the Asahi River. An old castle town of the Ikeda daimyo family, it dominates prefectural life. It is a major marketing centre with excellent rail connections to cities on the Inland Sea, Sea of Japan (East Sea), and Shikoku .
