Shaoxing is a prefecture-level city on the southern shore of Hangzhou Bay in northeastern Zhejiang province, China. Located on the south bank of the Qiantang River estuary, it borders Ningbo to the east, Taizhou to the southeast, Jinhua to the southwest, and Hangzhou to the west.
Shaoxing is an ancient city; in the 7th century bce it was the capital of the state of Yue, which was later annexed by the state of Chu. In 221 bce it became a part of the Qin empire and was under the commandery of Kuaiji. The seat of this commandery was transferred to Shaoxing in 129 ce.
