Fairmount is a town in Fairmount Township, Grant County in the east central part of the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 2,954 at the 2010 census. It is 55 miles (88 km) northeast of Indianapolis. Largely a bedroom community for nearby Marion, Fairmount is best known as the boyhood home of actor James Dean, who is buried there.
Fairmount Township is one of thirteen townships in Grant County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 4,239 and it contained 1,909 housing units.

ABOUT FAIRMOUNT. Located in Grant County, Indiana, the Town of Fairmount was first settled by Joseph Winslow, who cleared land about four miles north of town in 1830 on what is now the Marcus Winslow farm (the same farm where James Dean spent his childhood).
Fairmount is know as the culture and literation center of Indiana which has 14 times the national average of persons listed in the Who's Who of America. The Fairmount Academy and Fairmount High School, produced three college presidents, authors, scientists, artists, actors, inventors and the founder of the state of Oklahoma.
