The town of Ely lies on the northeast portion of the Isle of Ely and is dominated by a magnificent cathedral that dates mostly from the 11th and 12th centuries. The town has been the seat of a diocese since 1108, and until the Reformation its bishops held palatine jurisdiction over the entire Isle of Ely.
