Para las boundstones distinguieron tres nuevos tipos, manteniendo el término boundstone para los casos no identificables: Bafflestone: para componentes unidos por organismos cuya estructura actúa como pantalla, atrapando sedimento micrítico, y sus restos se conservan enterrados entre esos mismos sedimentos.
In the original classification by Dunham (1962), [1] boundstones are defined as "carbonate rocks showing signs of being bound during deposition [...]. The signs of binding are specific and occur within the sample being classified". [2]
Embry and Klovan proposed the subdivision of the Dunham 'boundstone' category on the basis of the means by which the sediment was organically-bound, thus yielding three new classes within the Dunham boundstone class:
Boundstone: Carbonate rocks showing signs of being bound during deposition (Dunham, 1962). Embry and Klovan (1972) further expanded the boundstone classification on the basis of the fabric of the boundstone.
