The Wishing Spell is the live-action adaption of The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell, formerly in production at 20th Century Studios and 21 Laps Entertainment. Its production is currently delayed.

Chris Colfer, the author of the book series, was not only set to write the script adapting the first book in his The New York Times bestselling series, The Land of Stories, but he was also set to make his directorial debut with the project.

Chris Colfer regularly stated that he wanted his books to remain just books for a while but was not entirely against them being adapted later on.

In 2015 during a Q&A, Chris Colfer had expressed that if movie adaptations of his works were to be made, he wanted unknown actors for the parts of Alex and Conner Bailey, either Carol Burnett or Jane Lynch as Mother Goose, and joked that Meryl Streep "can pick whoever she wants", however a cast was never announced in 2017 or in later years.

In 2016, during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Chris Colfer first hinted at an adaptation of The Land of Stories, stating that he's been in several meetings and that an adaptation was "closer now than it has ever been". In that same interview, he was adamant at starring in his own movie and joked around that several fans have wanted to see him as Froggy and "that might be a fight [he'll] lose".

In 2017, The Hollywood Reporter announced that 21st Century Fox had picked up the rights to Chris Colfer's The Land of Stories series and that there would be a film adaptation of the first book in the series. It was also announced that Colfer would be set to executive produce, write, and direct the first film. Other people that were announced to be involved were Rob Weisbach as an executive producer, along with 21 Laps Entertainment's Shawn Levy and Dan Levine as producers.

Disney later bought the rights to 20th Century Fox, along with all its subsidiaries, which put the movie on hold for quite a while. Later on, in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic had began which further delayed production of the movie. In 2021, in an Entertainment Weekly interview, Colfer confirmed that the movie had been in development for two and a half years but he had taken the rights of his book back due to the many changes that resulted from the Disney acquisition and the pandemic. Colfer did, however, reveal, in the same interview, that he was still considering an adaptation with a new studio but wasn't "in a rush."

On February 7, 2024, in response to a Screen Rant article that praised the first season of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV series and listed more book series that they wanted to see turned into a TV series which included The Land of Stories as number one on the list, Colfer posted a screenshot of the article on X (formerly known as Twitter) where he said, "Thank you, @screenrant! We're working on it 😉," possibly hinting at a television adaptation of the book series rather than a film adaptation.
