Maratus is a spider genus of the family Salticidae (jumping spiders). These spiders are commonly referred to as peacock spiders due to the males' colorful and usually iridescent patterns on the upper surface of the abdomen often enhanced with lateral flaps or bristles, which they display during courtship.
A recent phylogenetic analysis by Girard et al (2021) confirmed the close relationship of this species with other peacock spiders, a relationship that was already hypothesised by others. It was included into Maratus by Jurgen Otto and David Hill ( Peckhamia 148.4 ) to maintain the monophyly of the genus Maratus
Peacock spiders are a type of jumping spider that is most commonly found in southern Australia, though one species can also be found in China. They belong to the genus Maratus, which is thought to contain 108 species in total. They are tiny spiders, often less than 4mm long and the size of a small grain of rice.
