Hohensolms was an old territory of the lords and counts of Solms, with Alt-Hohensolms Castle built in 1321 and destroyed in 1349, and Neu-Hohensolms Castle built in 1350. The latter was owned by the princely family until 1969.

Von der ehemaligen Residenz der Grafen Solms-Hohensolms sind die Ausstattung des Rittersaales, die Schnitzereien im Treppenhaus und die kunstvollen Holztäfelungen in den oberen Gemächern erhalten geblieben. Die Burg befindet sich seit 1953 im Besitz der Evangelischen Kirche in Hessen und Nassau und wird als Kinder- und Jugendgästehaus genutzt.
