Charles was arguably the best commander ever produced by the House of Habsburg, and undoubtedly the most able Habsburg general of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic era. Archduke Charles is credited with handing Napoleon his first major defeat.

The younger brother of Habsburg emperor Francis (and the older brother of Archduke John), Charles was the most respected Austrian Army commander of the early to mid-Napoleonic period, and one of the rare, capable military leaders to emerge from the Austrian imperial house.

Led by an innkeeper named Andreas Hofer, the rebels surprised and overwhelmed the Bavarian garrisons at Sterzing and Innsbruck, taking 6,000 prisoners and large quantities of supplies.
