The system’s beginnings lie in the 17th-century English Parliament with the purpose of providing popular representation in government but checked by the representation of upper-class interests.

As of 2022, roughly 40% of the world's national legislatures are bicameral, while unicameralism represents 60% nationally and much more at the subnational level. [1] Often, the members of the two chambers are elected or selected by different methods, which vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.
