  2. The cathedral was founded in the early 11th century under the Viking king Sitric Silkenbeard. It was rebuilt in stone in the late 12th century under the Norman potentate Strongbow, and considerably enlarged in the early 13th century, using Somerset stones and craftsmen.

Four years before St. Louis was chartered as a city in 1823, Christ Church was organized by 26 people who assembled for a service in a building that previously had been a dance hall and a courtroom. That worship service on Oct. 24, 1819, was the first for an Episcopal-Anglican congregation west of the Mississippi River.

  4. Just fifteen years shy of celebrating its millennium anniversary, Christ Church stands on an incredible platform of historic change. Its tower has stood tall watching while Dublin has established, evolved and emerged as a vibrant European city. Its walls have witnessed ten centuries of Irish history.

  6. Of the various buildings which compose Christ Church, the oldest is the 12th-century collegiate cathedral, originally the conventual church of St Frideswide’s priory. Almost as ancient as the cathedral, and on its southern side, is the Chapter House, part-Norman but mainly 13th, its interior stone walls painted to suggest tiles.

  7. Christ Church has a history characterized by internal stability and a commitment to fostering growth around the diocese and in the Episcopal Church broadly. Of the nine rectors leading the parish between 1894 and 1940, eight later become bishops of the Church.
