  4. Donald Judd’s use of cadmium red, a series of repeating black horizontals, and the central circular form in this work are reminiscent of his first freestanding floor piece, made about a year later untitled, 1962.

  5. Rather than portraying recognizable imagery, Judd’s blunt sculptures adhere to elemental geometric form and serial order. And yet, throughout his career, Judd retained a painter’s penchant for striking optical choices, often deploying color and reflective surfaces to stunning effect.

  6. This work shares its exterior dimensions with some of the floor pieces that Judd showed in his first solo exhibition at Green Gallery, New York (Don Judd, December 17, 1963–January 11, 1964). Unlike those works, the plywood surface of this piece is unpainted.

  7. Untitled comprises Judd’s seventh “stack,” a compositional mode that became the signature manifestation of his ideas. Every stack is installed like a spine or column, not only cantilevered out from the wall but also connecting floor to ceiling.
