The history of the Welsh language (Welsh: hanes yr iaith Gymraeg) spans over 1400 years, encompassing the stages of the language known as Primitive Welsh, Old Welsh, Middle Welsh, and Modern Welsh.

Today there is an increasing interest in Welsh among people of all ages and thousands of people are learning the language. The Welsh language can be seen and heard more widely in the everyday life of the people of Wales and especially in the fields of education, in the media and in public life.
