The Indian National Congress (INC), colloquially the Congress Party or simply the Congress, is a political party in India with deep roots in most regions of India. Founded on 28 December 1885, it was the first modern nationalist movement to emerge in the British Empire in Asia and Africa.

Prominent delegates included Dadabhai Naoroji, Surendranath Banerjee, Badruddin Tyabji, Pherozeshah Mehta, W. C. Banerjee, S. Ramaswami Mudaliar, [1] S. Subramania Iyer, and Romesh Chunder Dutt.

After India ’ s independence in that year, the Congress emerged as the ruling party, and it maintained power uninterrupted for three decades (1947 – 1977). Since then, the party has been in and out of power.
