The Mixed Men is a 1952 fix-up science fiction novel by the Canadian-American writer A. E. van Vogt, a compilation of several shorter pieces written in the early 1940s.
It falls to one man, Peter Maltby, brilliant leader of the feared Mixed Men, to unite the warring factions of his galaxy and guide them to victory. But first he must resolve his own crossed loyalties.

In The Mixed Men, it is some tens of thousands of years in the future, and humanity has colonized the entire Milky Way galaxy. The Imperial Battleship Star Cluster has been dispatched to the Greater Magellanic Cloud (a satellite galaxy of ours) on a ten-year mapping mission.
Alfred Elton van Vogt (/ v æ n v oʊ t / VAN VOHT; April 26, 1912 – January 26, 2000) was a Canadian-born American science fiction author. His fragmented, bizarre narrative style influenced later science fiction writers, notably Philip K. Dick.
The story covers Hunston taking control of the Mixed Men and leading a revolt against the Dellians in an attempt to take control and defeat the Star Cluster. Maltby is not trusted by the Mixed Men, and is left behind by the Star Cluster.
