Nancy Hanks Lincoln (February 5, 1784 – October 5, 1818) was the mother of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. Her marriage to Thomas Lincoln also produced a daughter, Sarah, and a son, Thomas Jr. When Nancy and Thomas had been married for just over 10 years, the family moved from Kentucky to western Perry County, Indiana, in 1816.

Nancy Hanks was born on February 5, 1784 in Hampshire County, Virginia (now Mineral County, West Virginia). Her mother Lucy, being a single mother, sent Nancy to live with her Aunt Elizabeth and husband Thomas Sparrow.
Once the pioneers arrived in the untamed wilderness, Nancy went to live with her mother’s sister, Rachel Shipley Berry, in the Beechwood area of Washington County, Kentucky. Years later when Nancy was a teenager she met Thomas Lincoln while still living with the Berry family.
