Spanish Florida (Spanish: La Florida) was the first major European land-claim and attempted settlement-area in northern America during the European Age of Discovery. La Florida formed part of the Captaincy General of Cuba, the Viceroyalty of New Spain, and the Spanish Empire during Spanish colonization of the Americas.

Florida officially became a Spanish colony. The Spanish established missions throughout the colony to convert Native Americans to Catholicism. Missions in northern Florida, such as those at St. Augustine and Apalachee (present-day Tallahassee), survived for many years.
Spanish Florida was primarily a military outpost after the first few great expeditions. The rationale was that the Spaniards needed to protect their fleets bringing goods and wealth from South and Central America back to Spain on the Gulf Stream currents.
