History. Today the Charterhouse is home to a community of Brothers who benefit from the charity established by Thomas Sutton early in the seventeenth century. However, our story is much more than the story of the almshouse. For we have been living the nation’s history since 1348.
History. The Charterhouse in 1770. Priory. In 1348, Walter Manny rented 13-acre (0.05 km 2) of land in Spital Croft, north of Long Lane, from the Master and Brethren of St Bartholomew's Hospital for a graveyard and plague pit for victims of the Black Death.
18 de ago. de 2021 · 1. The Black Death Skeleton. In 1348, when the devastating Black Death reached London, the site now occupied by Charterhouse Square was designated as a mass burial site for plague victims. It is thought that as many as 10,000 plague victims are buried under the square.
Set in the heart of Clerkenwell, the Charterhouse has been living the Nation’s history since 1348. Initially a Black Death burial ground, the site became home to the largest Carthusian monastery in the world until it was brutally dissolved in 1537 when 16 monks became proto-martyrs of the Reformation.

In 1346-8 the Black Death swept through Europe, killing somewhere between one-third and one-half of the population. The epidemic was so brutal, and so swift that it was impossible to bury the victims individually.
