Thomas Howard, 3rd duke of Norfolk was a powerful English noble who held a variety of high offices under King Henry VIII. Although he was valuable to the king as a military commander, he failed in his aspiration to become the chief minister of the realm.

Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk, KG, PC (10 March 1473 – 25 August 1554) was a prominent English politician and nobleman of the Tudor era. He was an uncle of two of the wives of King Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, both of whom were beheaded, and played a major role in the machinations affecting these royal marriages.

Thomas Howard, third Duke of Norfolk (1473-1554), was one of the most powerful nobles in the country. His first wife was Anne of York, the sister of Henry VII’s queen, Elizabeth of York. He was uncle to Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII’s second wife, and to Katherine Howard, Henry’s fifth wife.
Thomas Howard, the Duke of Norfolk, was an unlikely choice to defend the throne of newly crowned Queen Mary Tudor. He was 80 at the time.
He was made a Knight of the Garter in 1510, was created Earl of Surrey in 1514 and succeeded his father as Duke of Norfolk in 1524. In September 1514 he was prominent in leading the English army in defeating the Scots at the Battle of Flodden.
