Timur, also known as Tamerlane (8 April 1336 – 17–18 February 1405), was a Turco-Mongol conqueror who founded the Timurid Empire in and around modern-day Afghanistan, Iran, and Central Asia, becoming the first ruler of the Timurid dynasty.
The Timurid Empire was a late medieval, culturally Persianate [6] Turco-Mongol empire [7] [8] that dominated Greater Iran in the early 15th century, comprising modern-day Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, much of Central Asia, the South Caucasus, as well as parts of contemporary Pakistan, North India and Turkey.
The Timurid Empire was founded around 1370 by Timur, a Turco-Mongol military leader who rose to power within the Chagatai Khanate [i] – and sought to reclaim the remnants of Mongol Empire. Over a series of successful campaigns, Timur’s armies conquered what came to be the Timurid Empire.
