The concentration in Music exposes students to a wide variety of musical styles, sounds, and musical traditions in order to develop their critical understanding of music in diverse cultural and historical contexts.
About. We offer both an undergraduate and a graduate program. Undergraduates earn an A.B. with a concentration in music. Graduate students complete a PhD program in musicology, ethnomusicology, theory, composition, or Creative Practice and Critical Inquiry.
Academics. Undergraduate Studies. The study of music not only deepens the student’s appreciation and understanding of art, culture, and history; it hones the analytic, writing, creative, and critical thinking skills as much as or more than any liberal arts subject.
The Music Department offers undergraduate classes in which master performers coach chamber music ensembles, vocal ensembles, creative music, jazz, African music traditions, songwriting, or 21st-century ensemble in a number of different settings.
Experts from the Harvard community explore how music aids in learning, improves well-being, and fosters social change.
