The University of Southern California (USC, SC, Southern Cal or SoCal) is a private research university in Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1880 by Robert Maclay Widney, it is the oldest private research university in California.

The University of Southern California was founded following the efforts of Judge Robert M. Widney, who helped secure donations from several key figures in early Los Angeles history—a Protestant nurseryman, Ozro Childs; an Irish Catholic former governor, John Gately Downey; and a German Jewish banker, Isaias W. Hellman.
15 de may. de 2024 · After his arrival in 1917, philosopher Ralph Tyler Flewelling established USC as a bastion of personalism. In the 1920s the university created one of the country’s first schools of international relations and of public administration, as well as a pioneer program in cinematography.

History. On October 6, 1880, the University of Southern California opened its doors to its first students. Fifty-three young men and women were enrolled in its two departments, the “academic” or preparatory department and the college department, later referred to as the College of Liberal Arts.
