The decade of the 1820s in American history brought technological advances in transportation such as the Erie Canal and the Santa Fe Trail, early computing and hurricane studies, and a distinct souring of the way people in the United States saw their government.
Canal building was increasingly popular throughout the 1820s and ’30s, sometimes financed by states or by a combination of state and private effort. But many overbuilt or unwisely begun canal projects collapsed, and states that were “burned” in the process became more wary of such ventures.
During the 1820s, elements characteristic of the two-party system today began to emerge: national political parties with nominating conventions, partisan newspapers, political campaigns filled with “mudslinging” insults attacking opposing candidates.
