Hohensolms was an old territory of the lords and counts of Solms, with Alt-Hohensolms Castle built in 1321 and destroyed in 1349, and Neu-Hohensolms Castle built in 1350. The latter was owned by the princely family until 1969.

Hacia 1250 la familia se divide en Solms-Burgsolms (con Solms y Braunfels) y Solms-Königsberg-Hohensolms con el castillo de Königsberg en Biebertal, y después de 1320 también con el nuevo castillo de Alt-Hohensolms que fue destruido por la ciudad de Wetzlar en 1349, y entonces es remplazado por el castillo de Neu-Hohensolms en Hohenahr.
Sein Schloss Braunfels wurde 1621 kampflos von spanischen Truppen im Auftrag des Kaisers besetzt. 1629 belagerte Graf Philipp Moritz von Hohensolms erfolgreich Stadt und Schloss Braunfels. Kaiser Ferdinand II. belehnte daraufhin Johann t’Serclaes von Tilly 1630 mit dem Schloss. 1632 wurde das Schloss von schwedischen Truppen erobert, die es aber bereits 1634 wieder an die Kaiserlichen verloren.
