Scrope (pronounced "scroop") is the name of an old English family of Norman origin [1] that first came into prominence in the 14th century. The family has held the noble titles of Baron Scrope of Masham, Baron Scrope of Bolton, and for a brief time, the Earl of Wiltshire .
By his servant and mistress Martha Jeanes, or Janes, or Jones, alias San (d)ford, he had one son John (who died childless) and three daughters, who all survived and left children: Elizabeth Scrope – married Thomas Savage (3rd Earl Rivers) Annabella Scrope ( – 30 March 1704) – married John Grubham Howe.

The castle was constructed between 1378 and 1399 by Richard, 1st Baron Scrope. As tension mounted in the 1440s and 1450s the Scrope Barons of Bolton were allied with their neighbours, the Neville’s of Middleham.
