"Base Details," a satirical war poem by the British poet Siegfried Sassoon, takes aim at the military elite of World War I—the "scarlet Majors" who live indulgent, lavish lives while sending young men to die in their thousands.
The title itself is a double-edged sword - the details of what really goes on at a military base among top officers during wartime as well as the damning depths of its depravity. “If I were fierce” is not a compliment.
