The College. Peterhouse is the oldest of the Cambridge colleges (founded 1284) and over the past seven centuries our community has made a contribution to the wellbeing of society quite disproportionate to our size.
Peterhouse is the oldest constituent college of the University of Cambridge in England, founded in 1284 by Hugh de Balsham, Bishop of Ely. Peterhouse has around 300 undergraduate and 175 graduate students, and 54 fellows.
The College has survived pandemics, revolutions and political, religious and societal upheavals over more than 700 years. Its remarkable continuity is reflected in the historical benefactions that underpin its life and work today.
Peterhouse is the oldest of the constituent colleges in the University of Cambridge. It was founded in 1284 by Hugo de Balsham, Bishop of Ely, on its current site close to the centre of the City.
