Her mother early favoured a match between one of her children and a member of her English family, and when her nephew Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany visited Brunswick in June 1781, she lamented the fact that Caroline, because of her age, could not be present very often.

In 1814, Caroline left England with her adopted children to escape the persecutions of the king and his friends and traveled on the Continent, living principally in Italy. The prince of Wales continued to try to shed his wife, even after their only daughter Charlotte Augusta died in childbirth in 1817, age 20, leaving no heirs.
Undaunted, Caroline drove back to her house and sent a note to the king asking for a Coronation ‘next Monday’! She died 19 days after her frustrated attempt to get into the Abbey. Caroline's marriage to her cousin George, prince of Wales, in March 1795 was a spectacular disaster. Intimacy was confined to the first night, and the couple separated after the birth of their daughter Princess Charlotte in January 1796. Thereafter, Caroline spent much time on the continent with a strange entourage, which led to much gossip.

Caroline Amelia Elizabeth, of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, queen of George IV, second daughter of Duke Charles William Ferdinand of Brunswick and the Princess Augusta of England, sister of George III, was born 17 May 1768. The few anecdotes told of her childhood show that she was kind, good-hearted, and charitable.
