Cary Elwes es el tercer hijo del pintor Dominick Elwes y de la diseñadora de interiores Tessa Kennedy. Tras terminar sus estudios en Inglaterra fue a estudiar actuación al Sarah Lawrence College en Estados Unidos .
En cuanto a su vida amorosa, en el año 2002 Cary se casó con la actriz y fotógrafa Lisa Marie Kurbikoff, con quien comenzó a mantener relaciones en la segunda mitad de los años 90. La pareja tiene un hija llamada Dominique que nació en el año 2007.
