It sits on a volcanic plug of basalt known as Dumbarton Rock which is 240 feet (73 m) high and overlooks the Scottish town of Dumbarton.

  6. Dumbarton Castle is the most ancient continuously fortified place in the British Isles. Dùn Breatainn means 'fortress of the Britains'. Records of a 'rex Alo Cluathe', or king of Dumbarton Rock, go back at least as far as 7th century Irish chronicles.

In 1523 the Castle was briefly garrisoned with French troops by the Duke of Albany, though by 1530 it was held by James V.
