William Hal Ashby (September 2, 1929 – December 27, 1988) was an American film director and editor. His work exemplified the countercultural attitude of the era. He directed wide ranging films featuring iconic performances.

Biografia. El director, productor y editor William Hal Ashby nació en el seno de una familia de granjeros de Utah. Su padre se suicidó cuando Hal era todavía un adolescente. Después de abandonar sus estudios en la Universidad de su estado natal, Ashby se marchó al estado de California, logrando trabajar en los estudios Universal como impresor.
