Henry II (born 1133, Le Mans, Maine [now in France]—died July 6, 1189, near Tours) was the duke of Normandy (from 1150), count of Anjou (from 1151), duke of Aquitaine (from 1152), and king of England (from 1154), who greatly expanded his Anglo-French domains and strengthened the royal administration in England.
Personal Life & Legacy. According to contemporary scholars, Henry II was handsome and had freckles and a shock of red hair. Short and stocky, he had bowed legs from riding. The entire Plantagenet dynasty is infamous for their explosive temper, and Henry, the founder, was even more so.

Henry II was born in France and was the father of Geoffrey Plantagenet, the grandson of Henry I, and the great-grandson of William the Conqueror. In 1150 he became the Duke of Normandy. In 1152, he married Eleanor of Aquitaine who was the heir to lands in Aquitaine, France.
