University College London (UCL) was founded on 11 February 1826, under the name London University, as a secular alternative to the strictly religious universities of Oxford and Cambridge. It was founded with the intention from the beginning of it being a university, not a college or institute.

UCL was the first university to be established in London, and the first entirely secular university to admit students regardless of religion.

11 July 1905. Text of statute as originally enacted. Following the University of London's reconstitution in 1909, transforming it from an examining board to a federal university with constituent "schools", UCL, became a school of the University of London.
