Based upon others comments, it sounds like George may have been frustrated with people around him being self-centered; however I'm sure he was well aware of the universal meaning in the words of this song, especially given his studies in Buddhism.

His autobiography, published in 1980, was named after the song, and he stood by its philosophical sentiments. ‘I Me Mine’ is the ego problem.
