The name “Mount Bandai” is used to refer to the main peak “Bandai”, along with several other peaks including Akahani at 1,430m and Kushigamine at 1,636m, created during the 1888 eruption of Mount Bandai. Mount Bandai was originally called “Iwahashi-yama” which means “a rock ladder to the sky”.
Mt. Bandai provides great hiking terrain, ski fields, and dramatic scenery. Known as the Mt. Fuji of Aizu in Fukushima Prefecture , past eruptions of this sacred peak helped form the region's beautiful landscapes.

Mount Bandai is not a single peak but a complex of several volcanic peaks, including Bandai-san, Kushigamine, and Akahaniyama. The highest point, Bandai-san, stands at 1,816 meters (5,968 feet).
This mountain is the main peak in the Asahi Mountain Range with a peak 1,870 m above sea level and is one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains. The best way to enjoy this area is to traverse the entire length of the mountain range along the main ridge starting with Mt. O-asahi, a trek that takes about two to three nights or more.
Mount Bandai (磐梯山, Bandaisan) is a 1816 meter tall, dormant volcano overlooking Aizu-Wakamatsu in western Fukushima Prefecture. One of the 100 famous mountains of Japan, it used to have a conical shape that earned it the nickname Aizu-Fuji due to is resemblance to Mount Fuji.

The most recommended of the trails is the Happoudai Trail, which is the most accessible and has a conveniently located carpark close to its entrance.
This is one of the shortest route to the peak of Mt. bandai. It takes less than 4 hours as standard time. As it is, additional hiking around Goshiki-numa is recommended to enjoy Mt. Bandai.
