While English is widely spoken, the national language is Samoan; it’s a soft, beautiful tongue to listen to whether from the mouths of airport staff, shopkeepers or ‘Aunties’ sharing the village gossip.
It is an official language, alongside English, in both jurisdictions. It is widely spoken across the Pacific region, heavily so in New Zealand and also in Australia and the United States. Among the Polynesian languages, Samoan is the most widely spoken by number of native speakers.

Ways of writing Samoan with the Latin alphabet were developed by Western missionaries in the 19th century. Religious texts in Samoan started to appear from 1839, distributed by the London Missionary Society. A complete Samoan translation of the Bible was published in 1862. A grammar of Samoan was published in the same year.
