The Professor, A Tale. was the first novel by English author Charlotte Brontë. It was written before Jane Eyre, but was rejected by many publishing houses. This is the only surviving manuscript of The Professor, the first of four novels by the English author Charlotte Brontë (1816–1855). She likely began drafting the work in 1844 or early 1845, when she was in her late twenties, upon returning home to Haworth after studying abroad in Brussels.
