The decisions appearing in the entire first volume and most of the second volume of United States Reports are not decisions of the Supreme Court of the United States. Instead, they are decisions from various Pennsylvania courts, dating from the colonial era and the first decade after American independence.
United States Reports began in 1790, retrospectively covering cases as far back as 1754. The first 90 volumes were prepared by private Supreme Court reporters, and went by various names.
